Is the Pixel 6 Still Supported? (October 2026 answer)
Short answer: this is the last month. Google guarantees the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro updates until October 2026. Both phones got the October 2026 security update (patch level 2026-10-05) on 6 October 2026, and Google has made no promise of anything after that. Unless Google extends support again, your Pixel 6 stops getting monthly security fixes from November 2026.
The facts (checked 16 October 2026)
| US launch | October 2021 |
| Google's promise | 5 years of OS and security updates from US launch |
| Guaranteed updates until | October 2026 |
| Latest update | October 2026 patch, build CP3A.261005.002.A1 (6 Oct 2026) |
| Pixel 6a | Different date: guaranteed until July 2027 |
Google's Pixel update policy puts the Pixel 6, 6 Pro and 6a in the group that gets "5 years of OS and security updates" from when each phone first went on sale in the US Google Store. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro launched there in October 2021, so their window closes this month. The October 2026 Pixel Update Bulletin fixed several critical bugs, and Droid Life's build list confirms the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro were on it.
What happens after October 2026?
- No more monthly security patches. The phone keeps working, but new Android vulnerabilities found from November on won't be fixed on it.
- Google Play system updates continue for a while. They patch some parts of Android, but only a small share of what a monthly update fixes.
- Apps keep working for now. Banking and payment apps tend to drop old patch levels eventually, not overnight.
- The Pixel 6a is not affected yet. It came out later and is guaranteed updates until July 2027.
What should you do?
- Install the October 2026 update now: Settings → System → Software update. Check that the security patch level reads 2026-10-05.
- Plan a replacement in the next few months if it's your main phone, especially if you use it for banking, DigiD or work email.
- If you buy used or refurbished, pick a Pixel 8 or newer. Google promises those 7 years of updates from their US launch, so a Pixel 8 is covered until October 2030 and newer models longer. A used Pixel 7 only has until October 2027, which is barely a year.
Have a Pixel 6a instead? It has its own date: see our Pixel 6a page. Thinking of upgrading? The Pixel 8 page shows how long it's covered.
Buying a used replacement?
A cheap used phone can still be a bad deal if it's Activation-Locked, reported stolen, carrier-locked or close to its own end-of-support date. Our own guide, Safe to Buy Used? The Second-Hand Phone & Gadget Checklist, walks you through every check before you pay. It's a paid PDF we make ourselves; you can also check any model for free on our Pixel 6 page and the full device list.
