When Does the Galaxy A54 Stop Getting Updates? (2026 answer)

Short answer: around March 2028 for security updates, and One UI 9 is its last big upgrade. Samsung promised the Galaxy A54 5G "up to four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates" when it launched in March 2023. On 19 October 2026 it's on One UI 8.5 (Android 16), still getting security patches (the October 2026 patch started rolling out in mid-October), and One UI 9 with Android 17, its fourth and final OS upgrade, is in beta. Samsung doesn't print end dates, so by our own maths (five years from launch) security updates should end around March 2028. That date is our estimate, not Samsung's.

Samsung's official security update scope page lists "Galaxy A54 5G, Galaxy A55 5G, Galaxy A56 5G, Galaxy A57 5G" under Current Models for Monthly Security Updates, in a group headed "Enterprise Models". The A54 isn't listed separately anywhere else on the page. Samsung adds that the monthly list "is subject to change as the regular support period expires", and that some carriers only ship quarterly updates even for phones on the monthly list.

In practice regular A54s are still getting patches about monthly: SamMobile reported the August 2026 patch (South Korea first, around 1 September) and the October 2026 patch, which fixes 62 issues and started on the international A54 in Thailand with firmware A546EXXSNFZJ3. Samsung's October 2026 bulletin lists what's in it. Expect it in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe over the coming days or weeks; timing varies by country and carrier.

Is the Galaxy A54 getting One UI 9?

Yes, it's promised, and it's the last one. The A54 launched on Android 13, so Android 14, 15 and 16 used three of its four promised upgrades. Android 17 with One UI 9 is the fourth, which completes the promise.

  • Samsung opened the One UI 9 beta for the A54 in India on 28 September 2026 (firmware A546EXXUNZZI4, with the September 2026 patch) (SamMobile).
  • A second beta followed on 7 October 2026 (A546EXXUNZZJ2), fixing camera stability (SamMobile).
  • The stable version isn't out yet and Samsung hasn't given a date. Press reports guess at November; treat that as a rumour until Samsung confirms it.

Before that, the A54 got One UI 8 (Android 16) in Asia, Europe and Latin America from October 2025 (SamMobile) and One UI 8.5 in Europe from 4 June 2026, with the May 2026 patch (firmware A546BXXUJFZE9) (SamMobile). Don't count on a One UI 9.x point release after One UI 9; Samsung hasn't promised one.

Where our end-of-support estimate comes from

  • Samsung's promise: "Galaxy A54 5G and Galaxy A34 5G also guarantee up to four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates", in its March 2023 launch announcement.
  • The maths: five years from the March 2023 launch is about March 2028. Support is tied to the model's launch, not to when you bought your phone, so an A54 bought new in 2025 has the same end date as one bought in 2023.
  • The track record: Samsung has kept its earlier promises. The Galaxy S20 dropped off the list about five years after launch, and the Galaxy S22 moved to quarterly updates after four years. The Galaxy A53, the A54's predecessor from 2022, is already on Samsung's quarterly list. Expect the A54 to slow to quarterly updates some time before the end; Samsung hasn't said when.

Timing still varies by country and carrier, and a last patch can arrive a little after the five-year mark. Treat March 2028 as a planning date, not a guarantee to the day.

What happens when updates stop?

  • The phone keeps working. Calls, photos and apps don't switch off.
  • New security holes stop getting fixed. That matters most for banking, payments, DigiD and email on the phone.
  • Apps follow eventually. Banking and payment apps start requiring a newer Android version or security level at some point, usually not straight away.
  • Before the end, updates slow down. Expect quarterly instead of monthly patches in the last stretch, then nothing.

Should you buy a used Galaxy A54 in 2026?

Only if it's cheap. A used A54 bought in October 2026 has roughly 17 months of security updates left (our estimate, to about March 2028) and one last Android upgrade to come. That's fine as a budget phone or a phone for a teenager, but the price should reflect it. If you buy one, check it's on One UI 8.5, install updates straight away, and look at the battery: it's a 2023 phone.

If you want more years for not much more money:

  • The Galaxy A55 5G (unveiled 11 March 2024) has the same promise, "up to four generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and five years of security updates" (Samsung), so it should get about a year more than the A54 (about March 2029, our estimate). It's on One UI 9 beta 3 now (SamMobile).
  • A used Galaxy S24 has a seven-year promise, to about January 2031 (our estimate).
  • A Pixel 8a gets updates until May 2031 by Google's own rule.

Our ranking of which used or refurbished phone to buy in 2026 compares them by years of updates left.

What should A54 owners do?

  1. Install updates as they arrive: Settings → Software update → Download and install. The October 2026 patch should reach you soon if it hasn't yet.
  2. Install One UI 9 when it appears, after a backup. It's your last major upgrade.
  3. Keep using it with confidence through 2027. It's fully supported today, including for banking, payments, DigiD and work email.
  4. Plan a replacement for early 2028. Check your security patch level from time to time (Settings → About phone → Software information); if it stops moving for several months, it's time.

Buying a used phone?

A cheap used phone can still be a bad deal if it's locked to someone else's account, reported stolen, carrier-locked or close to its own end-of-support date. Our own guide, Safe to Buy Used?
