When Does the Galaxy S24 Stop Getting Updates? (2026 answer)

Short answer: not for years. On 18 October 2026 the Galaxy S24, S24+, S24 Ultra and S24 FE are all on Samsung's list for monthly security updates, and they're getting One UI 9 with Android 17 right now. Samsung promised seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for the S24 series, and One UI 9 is only the third of those seven upgrades. Samsung doesn't print end dates, so by our own maths security updates should run until about early 2031 for the S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra and about autumn 2031 for the S24 FE. Those dates are our estimate, not Samsung's.

Samsung's official security update scope page lists "Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24 FE" under Current Models for Monthly Security Updates. Samsung adds that some carriers only ship quarterly updates, even for phones on the monthly list.

Is the Galaxy S24 getting One UI 9?

Yes, it's rolling out now. Stable One UI 9 started reaching the S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra in South Korea on 6 to 7 October 2026 (GSMArena, 9to5Google) and widened to Europe and India on 12 October (SamMobile). In the US, carrier models on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon got it from 12 October, with unlocked phones following later (SamMobile, PhoneArena). The S24 FE got it on Verizon on 13 October (Verizon).

Coming from One UI 8.5, the download is about 3.8 GB (GSMArena). Back up first: PhoneArena reported on 13 October that some owners of several Samsung models, including the S24 and S24 Ultra, got stuck on boot errors after updating, and described a Safe Mode workaround (PhoneArena).

How many Android upgrades are left?

Four, if Samsung keeps its promise. The S24 launched on Android 14 and has had Android 15 (One UI 7), Android 16 (One UI 8) and now Android 17 (One UI 9). Seven generations means four more major upgrades after this one. If Google keeps its yearly rhythm, the last would be Android 21 around 2030. That version number is our maths, not a Samsung statement.

Where our end-of-support estimates come from

  • Samsung's promise: "seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates", in its S24 launch announcement and its availability announcement of 30 January 2024. The S24 FE got the same promise in its September 2024 announcement.
  • The maths: seven years from January 2024 is January 2031; seven years from September to October 2024 is autumn 2031. Support is tied to the model's launch, not to when you bought your phone.
  • The track record: Samsung has kept its earlier promises. The Galaxy S20 dropped off the list about five years after launch, and the Galaxy S22 moved to quarterly updates after four years. Expect the S24 to slow to quarterly updates some years before the end, like older models did; Samsung hasn't said when.

Timing still varies by country and carrier. Treat these as planning dates, not guarantees to the day.

Is a Galaxy S24 worth buying used or refurbished?

Yes, it's one of the best used Samsung buys right now. A used S24 bought in October 2026 should get roughly four more years of security updates (our estimate, to about January 2031) and four more Android upgrades. Compare that with the Galaxy S23, which is getting its last major upgrade now and has security updates until about February 2028 (our estimate). If you buy one, check it's on One UI 9 or at least One UI 8.5 and install updates straight away: Settings → Software update → Download and install.

What should S24 owners do?

  1. Install One UI 9 when it appears, after a backup. Settings → Software update → Download and install.
  2. Don't think about replacing it for years. It's fully supported, including for banking, payments, DigiD and work email.
  3. Replace the battery, not the phone, if it gets weak. With updates until about 2031, a new battery is usually the cheaper fix.
